Historical Description

Appropriately titled "Big Bang," this stunning piece relays the impression of an expanding universe. Agam (Rishon LeZion, 1928-) utilizes vertical and horizontal lines of varied colors and widths to convey a sense of motion. The lines, which overlap and criss-cross, create strong parallels and perpendiculars. These lines start out wide towards the border and gradually thin out towards the center of the composition. This shift in size relays the impression that the viewer is being sucked into a colorful time warp, trapped in space and time. Agam masters the illusion of motion, as the lines appear to slowly recede in a circular motion towards the distant center of the composition.

This original serigraph is hand-signed by Yaacov Agam (Rishon LeZion, 1928-) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered 2/180 in pencil in the lower left margin.
