This whimsical, colorful Wassily Kandinsky Berge (Mountains), 1911 is instilled with a sense of excitement and heroism. The central figure appears on a white horse, gallantly galloping forward. Aptly entitled Berge (Mountains), two mountain ranges, one to the left and one to the right, stand tall. The mountains vary in appearance, relaying the impression of differing environments, as if the central figure is traveling from one region to another. Behind the central rider, who has a curious green head reminiscent of a horse, sits a lovely woman in a purple dress. To the left, two additional female figures stand, as if to excitedly welcome the rider home. Though the viewer cannot be certain of the tale behind this lively scene, one can imagine that this rider has undergone quite the adventure.
Created in 1911, this woodcut is from the edition of 1200 from the XXE Siecle publication (the total edition was 1545, 1200 from the XXE Siecle publication, 345 printed in the book Klänge). This work features the monogrammed stamp 'K' of the artist, Wassily Kandinsky (Moscow, 1866 - Neuilly-sur-Seine, 1944) in the lower center.
