Victor Vasarely Alpha Clock is an op-art sculpture which also serves a practical purpose. Composed of transparent material, this clock is an optical illusion, an artistic allegory to the enigmatic and repetitive nature of time. The face of the clock is composed of concentric circles, each layer of black and white convey a sense of movement and momentum. Below the face of the clock, square shapes are placed in a similar manner, further enabling the optical illusion.
These interacting patterns produce shifted perception and fluctuations of the image in the eyes of a viewer. Each side conveys an optic image that relays a sense of three dimensionality and motion. The geometric image is either receding or emerging out. The result is a hypnotic composition which combines geometric abstraction with color. Vasarely sought to redefine the limits of two dimensional space, in doing so, vibrating shapes and patterns create an illusion on a simple black and white palette.
Discussing his thoughts on abstraction, Vasarely stated, “The celebrated transition from representational to nonrepresentational art is only one of the stages in profound transformation taking place in the plastic arts. The term 'abstract' in painting refers not to an established fact, but to an irresistible trend toward plastic creation different from the kind we already know.” (Vasarely 1978, 13).
This acrylic and lucite sculpture is numbered from the edition of 500 in black ink in the lower left.
