Sam Francis Untitled, 1985 is a rare and unique work which mixes a variety of mediums and color techniques. Sam Francis is a celebrated American artist within the genre of abstract expressionism. This genre of art emphasized on spontaneous, automatic movements and subconscious creation. The resulting artworks appear to have splattered paint colors and loose, dynamic lines. To create these works, artists rely on emotional intensity and their subconscious states. Francis therefore uses these colors as a form of emotional catharsis. Francis also takes inspiration from Zen Buddhism and Jungian analysis. As such, each work allows viewers a rare opportunity to visit the artist’s inner psyche. We are given the keys to the private world of an artist.
This work in particular embodies the gestural nature of its genre. In this painted image, four orbs of color dominate the gaze. The masses of color are all maintained in various abstract formations. The shapes appear to layer over each other as if in a collage. Surrounding these forms are thin lines of paint dancing throughout the paper. The colors involved create a charismatic image which is filled with an upbeat energy. Furthermore, each form has a unique pattern, either by Francis’ own doing or by the nature of the medium. These patterns exude an eclectic and textural effect. From every angle, the viewer can find new details, making this a work with innumerable possibilities.
Created in 1985, this unique original color monotype with oil paint and ink is hand-signed by Sam Francis (San Mateo, 1923- Santa Monica, 1994) in pencil in the lower right; a unique and original work.
