Sam Francis Untitled, 1983 is an expressive and dynamic artwork from the abstract expressionist painter and printmaker in his iconic palette of primary colors. Texture is abounding from the top to bottom of this vertical composition. A light blue back drop of rippling woodgrain fills the negative space between the dominant forms with intricate patterns that draw the viewer in. Deep embossment adds to the dimensionality of the impression and a tactile appeal. Upon viewing in person, one can see the rich exterior of this striking piece which is not only multidimensional, but also utilizes a combination of mediums: oil paint, dry pigment, and ink; each material lending a different quality of surface.
Two bright yellow shapes flock either side of the image, forming a pathway that directs our line of sight. These bold and abstract forms are expressively executed with jagged edges and irregular crevices; despite their innate wildness, their placement is decisive, figured within the compositional space vertically, yet slightly angled towards the upper left register. These primary forms are not the only cues that Francis expertly employs to imply a sense of movement; spontaneous drips and splatters are charged with kinetic origins and dynamic effects. Deep red and midnight blue shapes provide contrast while a faint pastel purple lends a sense of relief; the meeting of all these techniques, colors, and textures ultimately find a harmonious balance.
Created in 1983, this unique original monotype with oil paint, dry pigment, and ink on handmade paper is hand signed by Sam Francis (San Mateo, 1923 - Santa Monica, 1994) in pencil in the lower right.
