Sam Francis Untitled, 1980 features a geometrically balanced composition in the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue. A thick blue cross at the center divides the work into four equal portions that contain red and yellow. Each block of red is sparsely flecked with random spots of blue, green, and yellow, adding an organic and playful touch to the overall work. The arms of the cross break past the acid yellow border at four equidistant points with tips that widen and whiten at the end. The blue hue of the cross mingles with the yellow border, creating an effect that captures the fluid movement of mixing pigment. Simple in composition yet subtle in detail, Sam Francis Untitled, 1980 is an exemplary work in the artist’s oeuvre.
