Sam Francis Monotype Untitled, 1980 displays the artist’s expert sense of balance. At the center of the composition is a yellow square, with each corner of the square pointed towards the center edge of each side. In a flurry of brushstrokes and splatters in dark blue, green, red, and yellow, structure emerges in the form of smaller polygonal shapes which circumnavigate the composition like the pans of a multicolored pin wheel. The darkest shades of blue hug the center yellow diamond, starting out dense, gradually dispersing into individual strokes as the colors near the sheet edge. In the upper right, lower right, and lower left, and upper left, Francis’s choice of polygonal forms are bi-colored rhombuses, each shape in two colors: yellow and purple, blue and green, red and green, and green and purple. Deviating from this pattern, a red rectangle sits in the upper right corner above the green rhombus. While there are splatters in all colors of the rainbow throughout this abstract expressionist extravaganza, they become more visually distinct towards as they radiate outward, popping in contrast against the white color of the handmade paper. Another added detail of this exceptional monotype is the embossing which is most visible in the rhombus and square shapes.
With this centrally focused composition, Sam Francis draws the viewer in, inviting them into his on world of vibrancy. He created a balance of fluidity and structure in Sam Francis monotype Untitled, 1980 that is emblematic of the artist’s recognizable style.
