Sam Francis Monotype Untitled is a unique original color monoprint with oil paint and ink on handmade paper that captures Francis’ unique style. The colors and shapes move freely across the page in unexpected but natural ways. Francis was a master of Abstract Expressionism, deeply exploring colors and their many dimensions, uses, and expressions on a canvas. In Untitled we are faced with brilliant blues as well as dashes of other bright colors that streak across the page in orange, red, and yellow. Neon-like bursts of blue beam out from sections of the image - the multitude of color is certain to excite any viewer.

Because of the focus on the color as the stand out element of a work of art, there is no discernable subject in Untitled. Without a subject, abstracted or realistic, the color is allowed to come to the forefront and act as the primary tool for expression through art. Francis uses color magnificently, creating depth by the overlay of colors, and texture through different means of applying color. The result is a highly complex work of art that is a feast for the eyes. Francis poured his own emotions into his work, and his inner feelings become clear to all through the deep patches of blue interspersed and overlapped by happier streaks of reds and yellows that are punctuated by small explosions of color.
