Sam Francis Trietto 3, 1991 reverberates with verdant colors, energetic shapes, compulsive lines—all layered upon each other. A later work of his entire oeuvre, Sam Francis showcases an expressive work of art with two transparent purple coils taking up opposite sides of the composition, twisting in various ways to create a fluid abstraction. Within the organic forms are a multitude of colors ranging from sky blue, wine red, turquoise, teal, and cobalt violet hues; not able to be contained, the colors bleed out onto the negative space in the sheet, creating a whirlwind of color. Opaque deep blue grids repeat across the sheet, chaotically overlapping the multitudes of hues, integrating seamlessly into the composition. Explosions of color inundate the sheet, bursts and splatters of vermillion reds and golden yellows added to the muddled chaos that shines elegantly. Accompanying highly irregular forms are thick lines that increase the volume of texture. There is an explosive quality where paints bleed of ferocious spirit, and the density of all these irregular forms and elements are combined to create an eclectic manifestation of who Sam Francis was as an abstract expressionist. Our minds become like his, where the range of creativity has no bounds when it comes to his painterly expressions on paper.
