Sam Francis Trietto 1, 1991 reverberates with verdant colors, energetic shapes, compulsive lines—all layered upon each other. Definitely a later work of his entire oeuvre, Sam Francis showcases an expressive work of art. Through the placement of the striking oval in the center of the image, Sam Francis draws the viewer in. In it, we can see a bright, plum tinted asterisk that seems to invite us for a closer inspection. Surrounded by spritzes of calming yellows, this color contrast immediately grabs our attention. No matter where you look you will feel your senses over stimulate with the electrifying pigments. Predominantly green, each corner is brimming with every other possible neon shade. Accompanying highly irregular forms are thick lines that increase the volume of texture. There is an explosive quality where paints bleed of ferocious spirit. The density of all these irregular forms and elements combines to create an eclectic manifestation of who Sam Francis was as an abstract expressionist. Our minds become like his, where the range of creativity has no bounds when it comes to his painterly expressions on paper.
