This Sam Francis acrylic and watercolor Untitled, 1983, showcases Francis’ signature style. The American artist Sam Francis is considered one of the predominant figures in Abstract Expressionism. Ever since the 1950s, he has developed his unique painting style which is characterized by loose brush strokes and vibrant colors. His inspiration for his artistic practice stems from Zen Buddhism and Jungian psychoanalysis. He was also greatly influenced by artists such as Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and Clifford Still. In the 1970s he began focusing on printing methods such as lithography, etching and monotype. His unique paintings remain the most desired works from his oeuvre.
This watercolor demonstrates Francis’ characteristic style. For this work, Francis spread think layers of paint onto an image carrier in order to form a color set of biomorphic dots. The background is painted a deep blue, with varying shades which seem to lighten or darken depending on the position of the viewer. In the center of the image is a curved white form. This white space is hand-splattered with thin and spontaneous strands of blue and green watercolor. The movement of the splatters is mesmerizing and spontaneous. This aspect of the watercolor immediately draws the eye and leads to contemplation on the interplay between form and color. The very center of curved space is painted in bold black strokes, enhanced with small mixtures of blue. The beautiful imagery of this work is only enhanced by its status as a one of a kind watercolor, making it an incredible addition to any collection.
Created in 1983, this unique original acrylic and water color on wove paper is stamped with the ‘Sam Francis’ and the Sam Francis estate stamp on the verso.
