Roy Lichtenstein The Den, 1991 is from the Interior series which is based on domestic interiors from advertisements. The rooms have a sterile, unlived in feel to them. They are also relics of a time period now past. The Interior series is unusual because the prints were created prior to the paintings based on the same material. Yellow light shines in through large windows on the far wall of the den. Lichtenstein uses black lines in alternating thickness to create shine on surfaces like windows, glass, and mirrors. The small table is made of glass, and we can see through the surface to the base below. The table in the corner has the distinctive look of natural woodgrain, as well as a mirrored top. Lichtenstein uses patterning to create tonality and color on his larger surface, such as the floor and the two walls. The work is full of Lichtenstein’s bold lines, vibrant colors, and fun texture, and is a delight to the senses.
