Roy Lichtenstein Red & Yellow Apple 1983 is an excellent example of the artist’s later work. Lichtenstein largely abandoned his famous comic strip panel artwork for more abstracted works. This work features gestural loose brushstrokes suggesting a form of a red and yellow apple. A far cry from Lichtenstein’s manufactural and precise comic strip works, this woodcut print shows the viewer more of Lichtenstein’s artistic hand and his experimentation with abstraction. The brushstrokes show the artist’s painterly hand and give the work a dynamic movement. Albeit simple in design and color choice, the print is striking and shows Lichtenstein’s skill in balancing a composition.
