This print is part of Lichtenstein’s Modern Head series and is the first of several prints concerning the same visual subject of an abstracted figure’s face. Mary Corlett, author of The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein: A Catalogue Raisonne 1948-1997, writes of this woodcut in particular: “This is Lichtenstein’s first woodcut with a print publisher, and his only work in this medium between 1959 and 1980.” This woodcut print uses Japanese woodcut printing techniques to create a Pop Art and modern work of art, showcasing Lichtenstein’s mastery of this print medium.
