Roy Lichtenstein The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, 1969, C.83 is a bright and vivid screenprint with a circular composition. The poster features a limited color palette of red, green, yellow, and black. Lichtenstein’s “comic-book” style and his use of Ben Day dots are present in the abstracted design. The artist incorporates many different objects into the flat two-dimensional work. On the right side of the circle we can see a Roman column and part of a bridge. In the center there is a man standing in front of buildings that make up the left side of the work. Lichtenstein uses yellow heavily on the right side and balances this with the red of the left side.
Mary Corlett, author of “The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein: A Catalogue Raisonne 1948-1993,” writes, “This image was created for Lichtenstein’s first solo exhibition in a New York museum and was also produced as a poster. The image was also featured on the cover of the October 1969 issue of ARTnews magazine.”
