Roy Lichtenstein Chem IA, 1970, C.100 is a single panel of the artist’s larger Peace Through Chemistry print. The print features what seems to be a scientist looking over a smoking test tube. The composition is done in a limited color palette of black and white with a highlight of yellow. Mary Corlett, author of The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein: A Catalogue Raisonne 1948-1997, writes “The image, related to the Peace Through Chemistry series, was produced for the benefit of the University of California, Irvine, in conjunction with the exhibition Roy Lichtenstein: Graphics, Reliefs, and Sculpture, 1969-1970 (October 27-December 6, 1970).’” (Corlett 115). This work, although an important element of a larger design, stands alone as a strong and captivating composition on its own.
