Roy Lichtenstein Reflections on The Scream, 1990 showcases the sophisticated cartoon style of the artist through the unusual subject of a screaming child. The reflection has dual meaning in the visual context of the Reflections series: it not only refers to the stylized reflective streaks integrated into each image, but it also alludes to the way those reflective streaks obscure certain features in the image and encourage contemplation or reflection about the highlighted parts. The reflective streaks in this image fall diagonally on either side of the wailing baby, drawing attention to the figure’s gaping mouth and the namesake of this work. What causes the figure to cry is left to interpretation, but the obvious distress of the figure draws attention to the conspicuous absence of a parental figure. Roy Lichtenstein Reflections on The Scream, 1990 remains a visually intriguing work of art that exemplifies the iconic Ben Day dots and stripes that define Lichtenstein’s oeuvre.
