Historical Description

Roy Lichtenstein Reflections on Girl, 1990 features the profile of a female face obscured and divided by diagonal streaks of stylized reflections. The reflection has dual meaning in the visual context of the Reflections series: it not only refers to the stylized reflective streaks integrated into each image, but it also alludes to the way those reflective streaks obscure certain features in the image and encourage contemplation or reflection about the highlighted parts. The reflective streaks in this image not only cut across the face of the female figure’s cheek and the back of her head, but they also cut through the text of the thought bubbles. The expression on the figure’s downturned face appears dejected, and the words of “kiss” and “love” peeking out from behind a red-striped reflection allude to romantic troubles as the source of sadness. The stylized reflections in Roy Lichtenstein Reflections on Girl, 1990 add a visual twist to an otherwise common subject found in the artist’s oeuvre.

Created in 1990, Roy Lichtenstein Reflections on Girl, 1990 is a lithograph, screenprint, woodcut, and metalized PVC collage with embossing on mold-made Somerset paper. This work is hand signed and dated by Roy Lichtenstein (New York, 1923 – New York, 1997) in the lower right and numbered from the edition of 68 in pencil in the lower right. This work has a blind stamp in the lower right that reads “(Tyler Graphics Ltd. Chop),” and workshop number RL89-984 in pencil in the lower left verso.
