Roy Lichtenstein Pyramids, 1969, C.87 is a simple composition depicting the Great Pyramids of Giza in an geometric abstract style. Lichtenstein reduces the pyramids to basic triangles and uses his favored comic book style “Ben Day dots” to give the structures dimension by creating shadows. The work only uses black, white, and yellow to construct the landscape. The limited color palette allows the viewer to focus on the strong design of the print and how the yellow of the sky pops against the black and white pyramids. “Pyramids was commissioned by the Print Collectors of the Friends of Art, associated with the Nelson Gallery (now the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art), Kansas City, Missouri,” writes Mary Corlett, author of The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein: A Catalogue Raisonne 1948-1997.
