Roy Lichtenstein Peace Through Chemistry IV, 1970, C.99 is a sharp design split into three vertical panels, each one containing a different composition relating to chemistry. In this print, only the leftmost panel has any color, some blue and a pop of yellow. The rest of the work is done in black and white. The design features various scientific objects, like a microscope, test tubes, and machinery gears. Mary Corlett, author of The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein: A Catalogue Raisonne 1948-1997, writes “In 1970 Lichtenstein told John Coplans: ‘I’ve never seen any painting like the Peace Through Chemistry image. There should have been images like this (in the 1920s and 1930s); it’s a mixture of a kind of W.P.A. mural painting and Cezanne or Grant Wood, mixed with American precisionist use of city imagery.’” (Corlett 115). This print is part a series of prints all concerning the same theme of “Peace Through Chemistry.”
