Rob Pruitt Panda, 2016 is an impressively-sized quadrant depicting the monochromatic shapes of pandas eating and playing. The innocuous and universally adored animal here becomes a glitzy and glamorous subject, as the entire 8-foot tall canvas is covered in an even shimmery layer of black and white glitter. What would have been an otherwise demure color palette takes on a larger-than-life presence as the entire work sparkles and morphs as the viewer moves around it and it catches various lights. Pruitt’s affinity for pandas grew at an early age, when the artist visited the National Zoo in Washington D.C. as a child. The black and white animals native to China instantly grabbed Pruitt’s attention. Decades later, the artist created an entire series depicting the giant bears and the works remain some of his most famous and sought-after creations. This impossible-to-ignore piece is the largest in the series, deftly balancing a minimal palette and economy of line with a gaudy and fantastic flair courtesy of the thick textural layer of flashy glitter. Over the last 3 decades Pruitt’s witty, invigorating, and highly aesthetic neo-pop works have made Pruitt an important player in the fine art world. This incredible large-scale piece perfectly exemplifies the clever and stunning style of the contemporary artist.
