Historical Description

The image of the Leaning Tower of Pisa supported by a giant feather brings to mind several associations all at once. We are reminded of the magnetism of iconic monuments from cultures long gone, of the touristic pilgrimages people make to far-flung sites, and of the impermanence of these constructions. The Tower is a perfect example, since it has long stood in this suspended state on the brink of collapse. Like our snapshots taken on vacation, Magritte's composition is both arbitrary and poignant. With a great blue sky hovering overhead, broken up into literal blocks of cloud, the feeling that something will soon happen is inescapable in this fantastical work.

Created after several original paintings dating to 1949-52 by René Magritte (1898-1967), this original color lithograph is facsimile signed 'Magritte' in graphite color in the lower right margin, and also initialed in pencil by Charley Herscovici, President of the Fondation Magritte and of the ADAGP. It bears the ADAGP blindstamp in the lower left margin and the Magritte Succession blindstamp in the lower right margin. Numbered from the edition of 275, it is printed on Rives paper and published and printed by Philippe Moreno, Paris, 2010.
