In the fascinating Rembrandt The Artist Drawing from a Model, c. 1647, Rembrandt uses an array of styles and finesse to depict an intimate scene of the artist's studio. The setting of the studio is rendered in great detail, highlighting the environment of props and tools, yet the foreground, is filled with subtle, whispery sketches. With an understated grace, a female nude materializes from crosshatched shadows and delicate outlines. Sometimes called the unfinished plate, this extraordinary work shows a drawing in process, emerging before your eyes.
