This stately portrait depicts Jan Antonides van der Linden, Professor of Medicine, c. 1665, standing with book in hand. Van der Linden appears as a mild-mannered individual, gazing out at the viewer with his head slightly turned to his right. The viewer gathers that he is both a wise and prominent figure, for he dons a large coat that makes him appear grand and important. Rembrandt contrasts van der Linden's illuminated face and crisp white sleeves and collar against the dark tones of his coat and the dark background shrouded in shadow, focusing on his subject rather than unnecessary props.
Created in c. 1665, this work, printed on a fine laid paper, is possibly a lifetime impression. According to Nowell-Usticke, this work is a State IV (of VII) impression; Biörklund State III (of VI); White & Boon State III (of V); Hind State III (of VI).
