Paul Jenkins Untitled, 1983 offers a striking composition that melds simplicity and complexity through the artist’s unconventional approach to painting. A bold green streak emerges from the upper right corner to slash diagonally to the lower left. A vibrant orange streak enters from the bottom right to bisect the green in a central burst of red, pink, yellow, purple and gray. A diffuse cloud of pale tangerine spreads under the bold lines to lend a dreamy, soft aura to the piece. A wing-like fan of pale green rising from the center to the left border enhances the lightness of the composition, as if it could lift off the paper and float away. The white background surrounding, and in places peeking through, the composition highlight the colors and emphasize their luminosity. The smooth lines of the work and the graceful application of the colors lend an extraordinary sense of movement and life to the piece. Jenkins’ masterful use of color and unique method of applying pigments to achieve varying degrees of transparency has created a work of profound tranquility and magic that, with only the gentlest urging, could gracefully flutter away.
Created in 1983, Untitled is a watercolor on paper hand-signed and dated by Paul Jenkins (Kansas City 1923 – New York 2012) in ink on the reverse. This is a unique and original work.
