This Paul Jenkins acrylic painting on canvas is gloriously saturated in color with bold, magnetic, and electrifying hues. Jenkins is known for his abstract expressionist paintings, which are highly pigmented, with loose, organic forms. The first thing you notice about this fantastic work of art is its color palette, and the second is the grand size. Even though there are so many things happening at once on the surface, Jenkins is able to convey a sense of balance and flow. He does so through the arrangement of forms, the striking composition anchored at opposing corners, with abstract imagery flowing from in a diagonal motion. In the upper register of the canvas a warm scarlet radiates from the top right corner. As this red color makes its way towards the center of the canvas, it is met by a dark, deep purple diagonal form which adds a sense of spatial depth while guiding the line of sight. Below this division clusters of bright colors in a prismatic array settle near the center. The yellow, green, teal, blue, and red shapes interact with one another in a game of push and pull, as some colors stand out and others recede. The format of this work is an elongated rectangle, with a towering height of just under 6 feet. The dramatic scale and shape of the canvas emphasizes verticality and provides space for Jenkins’ paints to pool, bloom and disperse.
