Historical Description

A historically and artistically impressive artwork, Pablo Picasso, Fleurs (For U.C.L.A), Flowers for UCLA, 1961 was a gift given to the university by Picasso in honor of an exhibition held in the Dickson Art Center. The exhibition was in support of the university and displayed more than 250 works from the artist’s beloved artistic periods. For the exhibition, Picasso created and signed 100 lithographs of the drawing of flowers, alongside the words “For UCLA”. This lithograph is the first ever gift given by the artist to an American university. The proceeds of the sale were donated towards an UCLA scholarship for study abroad.

The artwork is playful, the flowers are exuberantly colored and emblematic of Picasso’s style. An eclectic array of curves, dots and zig-zags add to the energetic mood of the image. The welcoming image is a sign of Picasso’s philanthropic spirit.

Created in 1961 this color lithograph on Arches paper is hand -signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin and inscribed ‘Epreuve d’artiste’(artist’s proof) in pencil in the lower left margin, aside from the numbered edition of 100.
