Pablo Picasso Fleur (Flower) 1961 is a whimsical piece, charming in its simplicity and bold lines. An open book lies diagonally across the lower half of the page. The pseudo-writing in the book is intertwined with the organic roots that rise off the book pages into the stem of a delightfully bright red and yellow flower. Despite the playful simplicity of the piece, each line is strong and deliberate, giving the drawing a beautiful solidity. The genuine charm of the work is reminiscent of Picasso’s iconic Peace Dove; the Flower, like the Dove, uses minimal graphic lines to its advantage to create an instantly memorable symbol. The original drawing of the flower was first created by Picasso for the cover of the French magazine Clarté, and there’s no denying that it’s a beautifully effective cover image. The suggestion of life and growth originating from knowledge is simple yet powerful, endowing the piece with the colorful brilliance exemplary of Picasso’s work.
Created in 1961, this color lithograph is hand signed by Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins,1973) in pencil in the lower right and signed and dated "21.11.61." in the stone in black in the lower left. This work is numbered from the edition of 150 in pencil in the lower left. This color lithograph was created after the original pencil drawing of a flower drawn for the cover of Clarté magazine.
