Created in 1959, this original lithograph is from the rare edition of 50 prior to the poster edition of 300. From our research, this is the finest example we have seen of this work come up for sale in the last 20 years. Hand signed by Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin, this work is numbered 19/50 in pencil in the lower left margin and printed by Arnéra, Vallauris on Arches paper with deckle edges on all sides (with very wide lower margin, without the text).
The lively and whimsical image of dancing musicians and an expressive faun is repeated in the poster version of this work created for the Galerie des Remparts in Antibes, France. An exhibition of Picasso’s drawings, prints, and posters were on display at the Galerie in 1959 and this image was used for the poster advertising the show. This particular edition, however, was created prior to the poster edition and numbered out of 50.
