Pablo Picasso Affiche Exposition de Céramiques (Ceramic Exhibit), 1958 shows an inquisitive and smiling face. The face is encircled by a green and brown border designed so that the green looks like the sun and its rays. It brings a delightful and happy disposition to the face. Picasso has added some color to the center of the face, creating a blush on the nose. The eyes are lively, outline with fluttering lines. The nose and mouth are also detailed with zigzagging green lines that send shock waves of color up and down the face. Because this poster is being used to advertise an exhibition of ceramics, we can rightfully assume that the face depicted is indeed meant to be on one of Picasso’s famous ceramics plates. The decorative bordering on the outside fits with the scheme, as does the geometric facial features which are often a staple of his ceramic faces. It is enchanting to see Picasso’s printed rendition of his ceramic medium.
Created in 1958, this color lithograph on wove paper is hand signed by by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881- Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right; also signed and dated in the plate ‘PICASSO | 14.1.58’ and from the edition of 500; published by Maison de la Pensée Française; printed by Mourlot, Paris.
