The colorful face of a clown takes center stage in Pablo Picasso 60 Years of Graphic Works, 1966. An orange ruff determines the border of the clown's face, and a similarly colored orange nose zig-zags down the center like lightning. Simple black dots mark the nostrils and a black line synched at the edges smiles placidly. A soft band of pink across the lips adds some attitude to the clown's face. The cheeks are graced with beautiful blue and aquamarine hues, and the eyes wink out with charming lavender and navy pupils. Throughout his career and life Picasso was interested by clowns and the circus, and this lithograph is a wonderful example of the joy the clown seemed to exert for Picasso.
This lithograph is also special because of its textual elements. Picasso has written words on the lithograph, and his writing is artwork of its own. Its colors and free flowing style fit well with the subject of the artwork, and can be enjoyed for their own merits.
Created in 1966, this color lithograph is hand signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right and numbered from the edition of 100 in pencil in the lower left. This lithograph was created for an exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art entitled ’60 Years of Graphic Art.’
