Designed with bold, striking features and dark tones, Pablo Picasso Tête de faune (Faun’s Head), 1962 features the bust of a faun dreamily gazing out at the viewer. The artist utilizes minimal white linear contours which obscure an image of his muse, Jacqueline Roque, and transform her into a mythical creature. The delicate rendering of the young woman, as well as the solid black background she sits on, contrast the vivid white lines which describe the faun. The faun maintains an aura of whimsy and childlike innocence that is appealing to the viewer. Picasso augments the significance of this creature by morphing it with the portrait of his second wife and most famous muse.
Created in 1962, this linocut in colors printed on Arches paper is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left margin.
