Dancers and musicians churn and twist to the inaudible music in this Pablo Picasso Linocut Les Danseurs au Hibou (Dancers with an Owl), 1959. Figures appear out of the background of undulating hills – they throw their arms above their head with joy and kick their legs up as they dance around. The largest figure on the right has their head thrown back in musical ecstasy while playing a flute. The scene is invigorating – even the goat seems to sway to the beat! Picasso captures fluid motion in this linocut, which is partially helped by the soft, smooth nature of the lines. Moving up from the lively scene, an illuminated owl perches silently on the branch of a thin tree and watches the festivities. A strong brow makes the owl appear serious – an interesting contrast from the pure joy of the revelers.
Created in 1959, this color linocut is hand signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin; numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower right margin; printed by Arnéra, Vallauris; published by Galerie Louise Leiris, Paris.
