Historical Description

Sweeping lines detail the lovely face of a woman in Pablo Picasso Jacqueline au chapeau à fleurs I (Jacqueline with a Flowered Hat I), 1962. This woman is none other than Jacqueline, Picasso’s last wife and the one whom he depicted more often in his work than any other. Her hair floats down to her shoulders and is partially hidden under an elaborate hat that is crowned with delicate flowers. Her eyes are wide open and she gazes directly out – looking right into the eyes of Picasso, her beloved. Treated with such tenderness, this linocut is not only a wonderful artwork, but also a testament to their love.

Created in 1962, this color linocut on Arches paper is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin; annotated “1er etat” (first state) in pencil in the lower left margin; aside from the numbered edition of 50; published by Louise Leiris, Paris and printed by Arnéra, Vallauris.
