Pablo Picasso Homme barbu couronné feuilles de vigne, 1962 is a spectacular and intricate linocut that demonstrates the artist’s technical mastery over the printmaking medium. The image is tinted brown, filling in the negative space by creatively using the tone to denote a neutral background. Varying lines Criss cross throughout the face, indentations that were carved into the plate that provide the illusion of depth and shadow while also being able to illustrate highlights where the light might hit. In traditional cubist style, there is a comfortable asymmetry within the subjects’ facial features that lends to a cohesive composition. The left eye, wide and emboldened, stares directly out past the canvas; the right eye and nose instead face in profile to the left, his mouth twisted in profile to the right. His beard is twisted and wavy, which compliments the headpiece that is weaved through the front of the subject’s hair.

Created in 1962, this linocut on Arches wove paper is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin and is numbered from the edition of 50 in the lower left margin.
