Pablo Picasso, Femme Assise au chignon (Seated Woman with a Chignon), 1962. The wide-set eyes and direct gaze of Picasso's subject recall the many depictions of Jacqueline he created during their 20-year marriage. Also instantly recognizable is the careful layering of gouged texture, straight lines and blocks of color that characterize this image. Each feature in the face is depicted from a different angle, lending a chaotic feeling to the individual parts that, surprisingly, resolves itself into a balanced whole. Part cubism, part abstraction, this portrait hides behind its chocolate tones an intentional artistic direction. Picasso's ability to envision the final result before beginning to cut into the linoleum - an irreversible process - enabled him to create such effortless masterworks as this.
Created in 1962, this original color linocut or linoleum cut was printed by Arnéra, Vallauris and published by Louise Leiris, Paris. Hand signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin, this work is numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left margin. Twenty artist's proofs exist as well, of which eight were reserved for the Leiris Gallery.
