The pair of Picasso Vase en verre avec deux visates (Glass Vase with Two Faces), c. 1958 are glass sculptures with senses of humor. Both stunning vases feature elegant high handles, and two expressive faces. Representing comedy and tragedy, we view these juxtaposed characters on either sides of the two glass vases. Due to the transparent quality of the hand blown glass, an interplay between the opposing designs materializes, creating a visual that is layered with duality. One vase is decorated with a neutral palette of black, white, and brown on clear glass. The other looks similar but instead has a palette of blue, brown and white on translucent clear glass. In both cases, figures materialize from the unexpected form of a voluminous vase with arched handles. Utilizing colorful details, Picasso showcases his mastery of line to outline the vases in a low relief of colorful details. Rings of color emphasize the curves of the vases, while angular details animate each side with different expressions. Though they are both individually charming, displaying the complete pair would create an even more memorable display.
Created c. 1958, this pair of unique glasses vases were made in the glass studio IVR Mazzega in Murano, Italy. One is etched on the base ‘P.PICASSO I.V.R. MAZZEGA’; also etched on the base is ‘R. ANATRA’, the signature of the master glassmaker, Renato Anatra, of the I.V.R. Mazzega glass studio in Murano, Italy.
