Pablo Picasso Minotaure aveugle guidé dans la nuit par une petite fille au pigeon (Blind Minotaur Led by Girl with Fluttering Dove) from the Vollard Suite, 1934 develops the subject of the Minotaur through the artist’s masterful use of line and figuration. The central figure, the blind Minotaur, is embedded with symbolism. With the head of a horned bull on a human body, Picasso emphasizes the strength and masculinity of his main character by with his grand scale in the scene, as well the precise definition to his musculature. The physical prowess and athleticism of the Minotaur is ultimately stripped away, as the creature becomes vulnerable without his sight. He relies on the guidance of a small female figure depicted in side profile. She carries a bird with outstretched wings, a symbol of freedom and peace, a motif that recurs throughout Picasso’s oeuvre.
