Pablo Picasso Femme nue assise et Trois Têtes barbues (Seated Nude Woman and Three Bearded Heads), from the Vollard Suite, 1934 is a wonderful example of the artist’s earlier work. This work features, as the title suggests, a nude woman seated in the left side of the composition looking toward three bearded busts on the right. The woman is rendered in minimal shading which leaves her bright and in focus. The three busts on the right, however, are rendered in deep greys which contrast the figure on the left. All three figures are rendered in a manner that is adjacent to realism which speaks to the cubist artist’s technical skill.
Created in 1934, this etching and aquatint is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin and from the edition of 250 printed on Montval paper with the Vollard watermark.
