Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Ceramic Visage No. 192 (Face No. 192), 1963 A.R. 492 is a charming ceramic adorned with one of Picasso's favorite things to draw, a simple, yet animated face. This whimsical and humorous face echoes that of a clown, conveying a sense of lighthearted nature and childlike sentiment. The shiny glaze adds to the brilliance of the limited palette Picasso used; the sky blue and sublime green cheeks and lips contrast against the white background of the natural earthenware clay. Swift, bold strokes of black come together to create the minimalist features of the eyes, bridge of the nose, and wide smile. The coloration serves as another characterizing element of this portrait, adding life and depth to this visage.  A painterly outline adorns the rim of the plate, emphasizing the round form, while defining the edge of his subject's circular head. Throughout the artwork, Picasso's lines are drawn with imprecision and his symmetry with a slight imbalance; subtle details which add freedom and expression to the piece. Picasso had created a number of faces for a series of ceramic plates; this particular example stands out as one of his more cheerful and exuberant works.
