Pablo Picasso ceramic Visage no. 0 (Face no. 0), 1963 A.R. 458 is a fun and exciting ceramic work. Outlined in thick black, the plane of the face is defined. Next, Picasso gets to have fun with the individual features. Picking a deep forest green for the bridge of the nose, Picasso draws a line down the center of the face, bisected by a wavy blue marking that both finishes the nose and defines the cheeks. The left cheek is a golden yellow – bright and warm. The other is a darker, ruby red that continues with the warm theme, but is slightly more subdued. To add the finishing touches, Picasso created simple eyes, nostrils, and a smiling mouth. The primary colors that Picasso has used on his ceramic bring a childlike delight to the plate.
The green central line is slightly off center, therefore making the face look as if it is depicted in very slight profile. This gives dynamism to the work that, though subtle, adds an interesting dimension. It brings a feeling of realism to the work as well as depth, which enhances the quality of the work.
Created in 1963, this madoura round plate of white earthenware clay with decoration in engobes (blue, yellow, pink, black) and enamel under glaze is inscribed ‘EDITION PICASSO’ and ‘MADOURA’ on the underside; numbered from the edition of 500 on the underside.
