Historical Description

This curious and playful pitcher utilizes soft tones of chestnut red, teal green, and sapphire blue to create an intriguing and expressive face. Picasso exaggerates the nose, which does not protrude from the surface but swoops down from top to bottom in a U-shaped curve. He depicts a face with eyes and mouth open wide, as if the subject is captured in an exclamation of surprise or shock. He further decorates the handle and the top of the pitcher with jagged lines of chestnut red; these red lines resemble curly hair, framing the face of the subject on this pitcher. Picasso intentionally adds patches of grey patina that contribute to a weathered appearance despite the glossy, smooth surface of the piece.

Created in 1969, this turned pitcher of white earthenware clay with decoration in engobes (red, green, blue)is numbered from the edition of 500. This work is inscribed 'EDITION PICASSO' and stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EDITION PICASSO' pottery stamps on the bottom.
