Pablo Picasso ceramic Visage de femme (Woman's Face), 1953 is a vibrantly colored pitcher decorated with contrasting saturated greens against chestnut browns and stark white. The woman’s face appears elegantly and naturally against the shape of the pitcher. Her eyes are remarkably wide and set above demurely curved lips. Her wavy hair is the most coveted aspect of this portrait. The glossy surface of the hair pops out against the matte texture of the ceramic. Moreover, her hair is gently tucked behind her ears, conveying a natural appearance. The most intriguing aspect of the work is the care with which Picasso has depicted a gentle, feminine face.
Created in 1953, Pablo Picasso ceramic Visage de femme (Woman's Face) is a Madoura white earthenware clay turned pitcher with decoration in engobes (green, red, white, blue, red patina) under partial glaze and with knife engraving. Inscribed ‘EDITION PICASSO’ on the underside and stamped with the ‘Madoura Plein Feu’ and ‘Edition Picasso’ pottery stamps on the underside, this work is numbered from the edition of 200 on the underside.
