Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Quatre Poissons Polychromes (Four Polychrome Fishes), 1947 is a wondrous mixture of color and charm. In the center of the dish are three fish, each a different color. Each fish is colored brightly with brown stripes running across their bodies. They are placed as such to give the impression of food on a platter. Picasso thus creates a multi-sensory experience with this ceramic dish. Not only are our eyes greeted by the beauty of the ceramic, we can also imagine how the fish may taste. The face of the dish is painted a muted yellow tone which contrasts beautifully with the color of the fish. Surrounding the plate is a border colored in brick red. This shade effortlessly frames the dish, drawing the eye to its main focus.

Created in 1947, this Picasso Madoura ceramic rectangular dish white earthenware clay, decoration in engobes and oxides under glaze; brick-red, yellow, blue, pink, green, black is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EDITION PICASSO' pottery stamps on verso is numbered from the edition of 200.
