This charming and petite turned pitcher echoes Picasso's very subtle sense of humour and whimsy. Picador sets itself apart from the other turned pitchers of Picasso's ceramic œuvre by having a brilliantly glazed black enamel on its surface. Offset by a deep, red earthenware color inherent to the medium, we see a simple silhouette of a proud picador on horseback, holding his lance steady and ready for action. The delicate waved marks and alternating black and red color along the handle add to the pitcher's unique decoration.

Created on August 5, 1952, this turned pitcher of red earthenware clay has been hand inscribed on the underside with 'EDITION | PICASSO | MADOURA'. From the edition of 500 works produced with paraffin decoration and black enamel.
