Gracing the center of Pablo Picasso ceramic Picador, 1952 A.R. 160 is a figure on horseback shrouded in shadow. The matt black stands out against the creamy white surface of the plate, which illuminates the figure. Standing, without context but for a wispy black strip of ground, the solitary man dominates the scene. We can imagine the quiet calm that this rider is experiencing, and we experience it for ourselves as we gaze upon this contemplative work. In every medium that he worked in, Picasso was a master at evoking feeling in his viewers. In Picador, 1952 A.R. 160, there is very little detail given to the rider or his horse. Nonetheless, immense feeling is evoked in this depiction. We encounter solitude, peace, and introspection all within the bounds of the ceramic plate.
The picador was a common theme for Picasso in his greater oeuvre and it factors onto his ceramics often as well. This interest comes from his childhood, when he used to attend bullfights in Spain. He was deeply attracted to the adventure and myth of the bull fight, and it makes for compelling works of art.
Created in 1952, this Madoura turned round plate of white earthenware clay with white enamel and oxidized paraffin decoration (black) is inscribed 'Edition Picasso', with the 'Edition Picasso' stamp on the underside of the plate. From the edition of 500.
