Pablo Picasso Little Sun (Petite Soleil), 1968-1969 is a delightful and endearing work from the latter years of the artist’s life. Utilizing white, green, red, and blue patinas, the face imprinted in this work gleams out at the viewer with the brilliant reflection of light on the shiny glaze. The red glaze beautifully contrasts with the cooler tones which comprise most of the image, appropriately giving a sense of warmth to the image of this little sun. As the title suggests, the work effuses a sunny aura, drawing the viewer in with its benevolent expression. Playfully composed of a bright square face with vibrant colors, Picasso utilizes minimal design elements to convey the sense of expression on the face depicted in this ceramic. This work is very reminiscent of a linocut in both technique and the total effect in its graphic use of both color and imagery. Little Sun (Petite Soleil), 1968-1969 is an excellent example of the artist’s mastery of representation of expression and creative ingenuity.
