Historical Description

Created in 1969 for the poster edition prior to the text of 50 proofs, designed by Galerie Madoura and Arnéra, using as a subject a ceramic plaque titled Face of a Gentleman with Wavy Hair (AR.573) by Pablo Picasso in Vallauris between Dec. 1968 and Jan. 1969. According to Rodrigo, the motif of this poster has been reproduced published for exhibitions including that of Picasso’s ceramic work at Galerie Madoura, Cannes on April 4, 1969.

This exquisite impression of the ceramic plaque from which this work is based, is able to capture the varying textures and light affects of the actual piece. It is a boldly colored, engaging piece, with brilliant whites, blues, and greens highlighted with a shiny finish. The indentations of the wavy hair, the bridge of the nose, and even his goatee accentuate Picasso’s own mastery of the clay medium.
