Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Peintre Debout à son Chevalet, avec un modèle (Painter standing at his easel, with a model), 1966 depicts a familiar scene of an artist at work, reimagined in Picasso’s distinct style. On the left, the form of a nude woman is deftly rendered through minimal yet lively black lines. On the right, the artist’s face appears above white brushstrokes which suggest the shape of the artist’s body. The artist stands at his easel which, rendered through the same white strokes, seems to almost become one with the artist, uniting the two and juxtaposing the artist with the model on the left. Created as an illustration for a book of verses by Pierre Reverdy, poet and Picasso’s friend, the piece explores the dynamic of the viewer and the viewed.

Create in 1966, this aquatint is hand signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881- Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 50 in the lower left margin.
