Pablo Picasso Le Petit Pierrot aux Fleurs (The Small Pierrot with Flowers), c. 1960; Instilled with a sense of personal charm, this delightful image conveys Picasso's son Paulo dressed as a pierrot. As a male character of French pantomime, the pierrot typically dons a white face, a loose costume, and a floppy hat, as displayed in this exquisite depiction. In pantomime, the pierrot often plays the role of the fool whose naiveté causes him to fall victim to pranks. Contrary to this role, Picasso's depiction of the small pierrot with flowers appears heartfelt and adoring. We gather the sense that Picasso is paying homage to Paulo's innocence and naiveté rather than poking fun at it. The small pierrot stands against a soft green background presenting a colorful bouquet of flowers to the viewer. With slightly downturned eyes and a shy, pensive expression on his face, he appears as the epitome of youth and innocence.
Created c. 1960, this aquatint on chine collé is based on an original work by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973) done in oil on canvas from 1929 of the same title. This work is hand signed in the lower right margin by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973) in pencil and numbered from the edition of 100 in pencil in the lower left margin.
